What are pan-fried potatoes?

Pan-Fried Potatoes
  • Flavorful and Crispy Texture: Fried potatoes are a popular dish known for their delectable flavor and enticingly crispy texture. The frying process, whether in butter, oil, or other fats, creates a golden-brown crust on the outside of the potatoes, which adds a delightful crunch. This contrast between the crispy exterior and soft interior makes them highly enjoyable to eat.
  • Versatility in Preparation: Fried potatoes offer a wide range of preparation possibilities. From classic pan-fried potatoes seasoned with simple herbs and spices to more elaborate variations, such as loaded cheese and bacon fries or seasoned wedges, the dish can be tailored to suit various tastes and occasions. Additionally, fried potatoes can be served as a standalone side dish, a complement to main courses, or even as a breakfast item, showcasing their versatility in the culinary world.

Here’s what you’ll need

Equipment:

Ingredients:

Potatoes – I used yellow potatoes cause that’s what I had on hand, but you can really use any kind of potato. Russets and reds are also great options.

Onions – I used Vidalia onions.

Butter – you can also use olive oil or avocado oil.

Garlic Powder

Paprika – I usually like to use Smoked Paprika for this but I was out today. Smoked gives it that extra layer of flavor!

Black Pepper and Salt

Parsley – this is totally optional but it give it that pop of color!

How to make Pan-fried potatoes

Start by dicing the potatoes into bite-sized pieces. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess starch, which will help achieve a crispier texture. You have the option to peel the potatoes or leave the skin on for added fiber and rustic appeal.

Use a large frying pan and add the butter. Set the heat to medium and allow the butter to melt and coat the pan evenly. Gently add the diced potatoes to the pan, spreading them out to form a single layer. Pour ¼ cup of water over the potatoes; this will create steam and help soften them. Cover the pan with a lid and cook for about 10 minutes.

After the initial 10 minutes, remove the lid and add the diced onions and all the seasonings—garlic powder, paprika, black pepper, and salt. Stir everything together to ensure even distribution of flavors. Allow the mixture to cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender on the inside and golden-brown and crispy on the outside.

Once the potatoes have reached the desired crispiness, turn off the heat. Sprinkle some freshly chopped parsley on top for a pop of color and a burst of freshness. Your pan-fried potatoes are now ready to be served!

Storage and Re-Heating

Storage – To maintain the freshness and quality of your pan-fried potatoes, transfer any leftovers to an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag. Place the container in the refrigerator within two hours of cooking. Refrigerated pan-fried potatoes can last for up to 3-4 days.

Re-heating – To reheat your refrigerated or thawed pan-fried potatoes, there are a few methods you can use:

  • Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and spread the potatoes in a single layer on a baking sheet. Reheat for 10-15 minutes or until warmed through and crispy.
  • Stovetop: Reheat the potatoes in a skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally until they are heated thoroughly.
  • Microwave: Place the potatoes in a microwave-safe dish and heat on medium power in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until they reach the desired temperature.
